Eastern Box Turtles are colorful, small, and make their homes in woodlands. This female is one of a pair who frequents our property. Their species is currently considered threated due to loss of habitat and the illegal pet trade. It takes 10-20 years for an Eastern Box Turtle to reach sexual maturity, and from there they only lay 2-7 eggs per year. If you find one, leave him in nature where he belongs. If it's safe to do so, move your new friend out of the road by carrying him straight across in the direction he was facing when you found him.
